Phosphate Train T-Shirt - Christmas Island is a tiny little island in the Indian Ocean, with a popluation just over 2,000. Phosphate mining is the only significant economic enterprise, although these days there is also a resort. Fun fact: the phosphate was originally deposited on the island as guano! The standard gauge railway was constructed in 1914 to connect the mine to Flying Fish Cove. The mine was closed for a time, and the railroad dismantled, leaving this train stamp as one of the few reminders. The postal system was operated by the Phosphate Commission until 1993 when the Australian Postal Service took over. The train enthusiast in your life will appreciate this unusual train t-shirt!
