Cable Car

San Francisco Cable Car T-Shirt - If the view were a little different, I bet we could see Alcatraz in the distance. The last manually operated cable car system in the world is in San Francisco, California. The first line was constructed there in 1873, and three lines are still in operation. As the name suggests, the cars are pulled along by an underground cable. The gripman operates a lever to clamp onto and release the car from the cable as it makes its way along its route. The cables are driven by electric motors in the system's power house, and move at a constant 9.5 mph. Today, San Francisco's cable cars are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The train enthusiast (or Rice-a-Roni lover) in your life will appreciate this nostalgiac cable car t-shirt!
