Football T-Shirt - This stamp was released to celebrate 100 years of professional football, but the earliest games were quite different from the sport Americans know and love today. The first game pitted Princeton against Rutgers, on November 6, 1869. There were 25 men on each team, and the round ball could not be picked up or carried. It wasn't until 1880 that the game really distanced itself from rugby. The team size was reduced to 11, and the "snap" replaced the old-style scrum. The first real "professional" player was William "Pudge" Heffelfinger, who, in 1892 was paid $500 to play for Allegheny Athletic Association in a game against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. The rest, as they say, is history. The sports fan in your life will appreciate this classic football t-shirt!
